The Candy Man is door velen vertolkt, degene die er een hitnotering mee behaalde was Sammy Davis jr (1925-1990). In de film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory uit 1971 was dit het hoofdnummer. Dit is een Amerikaanse muziekfilm uit 1971, gemaakt naar het boek van Roald Dahl, die zeer ontevreden was over de film.

De plot week af van zijn boek en dat stelde hem teleur. Hij weigerde daarna de rechten van het vervolg op Sjakie en de chocoladefabriek (zoals de Nederlandse vertaling heet) te verkopen. De filmmuziek werd gecomponeerd door Leslie Bricusse en Anthony Newley.
